Stroke of Luck or the Gift from God?

Lippi has come back! I could not believe it! Yes, already before the end of the previous season it was clear that Ancelotti would be to fired, but I did not expect that his place would be taken by Lippi... I did not expect but was happy when knew it. Lippi has come back! He understood that Milan was not his city and "Inter" was not his team. The Man Who Is Winning has come back! Juve bosses realized that Turin is not city of Ancelotti and "Juventus" is not his team... Lippi and club's bosses understood that they need each other to climb football tops anew.

It seemed, that wide and clear horyzons were opening before "Juventus". But it was one great problem - midfield was greatly weakened. At first, Zidane had left the team, the player who had been being a face of Old Signora for 5 years and, without any doubts, the best midfield of the world. At second, in connection with drugs' scandal for undetermined time Davids was disqualified, the second man in Juve's central line. "Juventus" at once lost his two titans of midfield! Yes, it seemed to be a clear thing that Fabian O'Neil should take Zizou's place, but it was more obvious that he would not be able to replace him at all. Yes, Nedved has come, but he is playing in another position, he is left midfield with an accent on attack, who is able to score by himself but hardly can be a playmaker. After all, midfield very weakened. But the defence became much stronger - Thuram and Buffon have come! Frankly speaking, invitation of Buffon for great money seemed to be a glut - van der Saar was not bad... But, at first, italian in Juve's goal is looking almost as a rule, and at second, perfect and young goalkeeper did not appeared in enemy's camp - only laziest of the world grands did not offer Parma bosses to sold Buffon to them. Notwithstanding Inzaghi's leaving, no problems had to appear in attack - Salas is also the star of world's fame. Eventually, we can say that there is no evil without good - you loose somewhere and find elsewhere... The season will show all, I thought.

Tropheo Berluskoni, the traditional battle between two titans - "Milanа" and "Juventu", - is half-oficial start of the season in Italy. It is the first match, when you can watch a new team and new players in action against strong enemy. And Juve did not impress me, having been acknowledged all my fears as to weakness of his midfield. To my great surprise, O'Neil was absent at all in main squad, and the place of Davids was taken by... Tudor! Central defender! There were no words enough to describe neither my surprise nor Juve's central line: Nedved - in left wing, Zambrotta - in right, Tudor and Tacchinardi in centre. I still wonder how such squad was playing on equal level with Milan's midfield, which was headed by Rui Costa. Zambrotta was the only constructive player, Nedved played worser then even I expected, and it would be stupid to expect creative play from Tacchinardi, and especially from Tudor. I admitted that new strategy, after Zidane's leaving, was grounded on active play throug the flanks - wing midfields were actively assisted by wing defenders: Nedvedу by Pessotto, and Zambrotta with Zennoni. Somehow or other, but that Cup was taken by Juve - Buffon saved a couple of after-match penalty kicks, and Davids, who came on the shift at the end of the match (he was allowed to do that because Berlusconi Trophey is not official tournament) under the hostile whistle of "SanSirro", notwithstanding my fears (which were connected with the penalty serie in the final of League-1996), scored the goal. The first trophey was obtained. But except the pleasant victory under "Milanом" it meant nothing - Ancelotti had taken it twice but hardly he was very hailed for that. And I did not want to remember that "Juventus" never got scudetto after he had taken Berlusconi Cup...

Meanwhile, the championsip started very successively - three victories in three matches (among them the hard one under "Chievo"), 9 balls scored and 2 missed - how it could be talken about some crisis in midfield? But it might be talken about. A long serie of gray and dull matches followes the perfect start. And if zero draw in 4ht lap with "Lecce" could be considered as coincidental, the defeat in "DelleAlpi" from champion - "Roma" - forced to get down from the skies to the ground and to think thoughtfully under seriousness of the intensions to become the champion. But, frankly speaking, the score of the match with "Roma" did not accorded to the plot of the game and it was possible to hope for better. Unfortunatly, stupid draw with "Torino", when Torro saved the match after had missed three balls (!), broke all hopes. Then followed four draws more, two of which were dry, and in addition to all problems in Bologna Salas was seriously injured, having been lost for the team till the end of the season - as a result the attack appeared very weakened. But, as it could be judged from the last matches, in which only a single ball was missed, the play in defence had become strong. Pitifully, this optimistic conclusion was quickly ruined by Alberto Malesani's "Hellas Verona", which scored two goals. In that match with great difficulties on the last minutes of the match thanks to efforts of Trezeguet and Tudor "Juventus" saved a point. But club's bosses expected not such successes from old-new coaches - Lippi and his crew appeared under a threat to be fired, and the seven matches without victories gave bosses a right to do that step. By fate's irony, all had to be resolved in "DelleAlpi" in match afainst "Parma", like in 1999... This time all happened another way - "Parma" was defeated 3:1. The credit of trust to Lippi was prolonged. And quite intime - the defeat from "Lazio" in the 12th lap in "Stadio Olimpico" was fair - Juventus was playing too weakly. Old Signora found herself on the 5th position, behind "Roma", "Inter", "Chievo" and "Lazio". The future was very dim and foggy... In 14th lap only penalty kick, got by Zalayeta, saved Juve from defeat in "San Sirro". What scudetto could be talken about, if in 14 of championship was only 5 wins? Perhaps, exactly this thought appeared in the heads of Juve's players and they waon 3 last matches of the first circle with the total score 9:0, that allowed Old Signora to take the fourth position. Perfect start of championship, perfect end of hte circle, and it was left only to wonder - why they had not played such way in the other matches?

Meanwhile, Juve's play in Champions League made dual impression. Into the second group tournament "Juventus" came without any hard efforts from the group, where his competitors were "Porto", "Celtic" and "Rusenborg". Old Signora played draws with portuguese and norwegian teams on their fields (0:0 and 1:1 appropriatly), and triumphed at home (3:1 and 1:0). The matches with "Celtic" were spent in different way and were finished with the total score 6:6! "Juventus" started his european trip exactly with the match of the second lap against scotch team in "DelleAlpi" (the first lap was cancelled because of the terrorist attacks of September 11 in New-York). Already in the first half Trezeguet scored twice, but in the second half "Celtic" awaked and equalized the score! Lippi emergently cast into the fight fresh forces, and Amoruso created for himself penalty kick and realized it - 3:2, on favour of Old Signora. In Glasgow "Juventus" came when he already had guaranteed for himself the first place and allowed scotch team to obtain the victory in the thrilling match - 3:4.

Two matches were played before Cristmas in the second group tournament, where Juve got "Arsenal", "Deportivo" and "Bayer Leverkusen" as his rivals. The first match, in "DelleAlpi" against "Bayer Leverkusenа", became one of the best in the season - foe was smashed 4:0. The second was lost in "Hiberry" to "Arsenal" - 1:3. In the second time Henry and Lunberg scored, but exactly in the beginning of the second half Trezeguet revanged one ball, and when it lasted about 10 minutes to the end of the match, bianco-neri rushed to the final escalade, which finished with the goal into their own net. And the unpleasant joke of fate is that counter-attack of london team was started by... arbiter! Exactly from his leg the ball, which was sent from one Juve player to another, who was standing behind referee, bounced precisely to Arsenal player. Owners of the field immediately rushed to counter-attack which ended with the right shoot of Lunberg. Disappointed italians tried to argue, but Davids only got yellow card. After two laps all of the four clubs had 3 points - all struggle was left till spring, and whole attention was given to Serie A.

Already after the first game of the second circle "Juventus" had replaced "Chievo" from the third place and prepeared to attack the two leaders - "Inter" and "Roma", who were ahead of Juve on the distance of 5 and 4 points consequently. And Old Signora did not wait, and approached closer to the competitors during the next three laps, having been presented to rivals - "Atalanta", "Chievo" and "Lecce" - with three balls. And in 22th lap in Rome she could outstripp one of the straight competitors, but even a draw in those circumstances was more than satisfactory - it was just one step for the first position. And "Juventus" even got it after victory under "Fiorentina", but not for a long time - after the hardest derby with "Torino" was forced to go down on the third position again, having been behind of roman and milan teams on 1 point. But the championship was approaching to it's finish and every single point was on the value of gold - noone of the three favourits had no right on mistake.

Till that moment "Juventus" already had been out of Champions League. I think, that Juve's desteny was solved in the third lap, after end of the match with "Deportivo" in "Delle Alpi". Having been played without disqualified Nedvedа and Birindelli, injured Montero and Tudor, Old Signora had an advantage in the game (for example, made three times more shoots to the goal than the foe) but failed to appear it into scored balls. This draw is twice unpleasant because of the fact that at the end of the match DelPiero did not scored from penalty kick, which was saved by Molina. "It was a bad game. We made a lot of mistakes, allowed to play the enemy, and failed to realize owr momwnts," - said Marchello Lippi after the match. In the two next matches in guets against "Deportivo" and "Bayer" Juve demonstrated football of low quality, having been played one of the worst games in season - two defeats a row closed the way to quarterfinal. But italians were leaving League with their heads erected high - in the last lap "Juventus" with the second squad defeated "Arsenal", which had chances to pass through the group tournament in case of Bayer's not winning. All the match englishmen had initiative but at first could not score penalty kick (Carini, the third Juve's goalkeeper saved his team), and then after corner missed the ball from Zalayeta. Now all forces were cast on the inner championship.

In 25th lap of Serie A "Juventus" defeated "Bologna" only with great difficulties. Guests opened the score, but they were walking upon the air for a short time - Trezeguet scored almost on the next minute. And after that the match was resembled as two drops of water to the previous one of these teams - Old Signora closed players from Bologna on their part of the field, but could nothing to do with their defence. And on the last minutes of the mattch when it seemed that Juve would loose two precious points, after cross of Pessotto from left wing defender of the guests sent the ball to the goal of Pagliuca! In the next lap "Juventus" had to solve the questions with "Inter" in mutual struggle. In case of victory Juve would increase his chances on scudetto very high - he not only would get 3 points but also deprived one of two rivals of them. As said, it was a game for six points. But started it badly - on about 15th minute Seedorf with perfect shoot from edge of penalty zone, from position of left central, sticked the ball to Buffon's goal. During next 20 minutes "Juventus" restored par - Trezeguet appeared the best jumper in nero-azouri's penalty ground. Also in the first hals befall exactly that unluck without which happiness is impossible - Thuram, who played in the centre of defence in that match, was injured and shifted on Tudor. Precisely groatian defender on the about 80th minute gave to his team great opportunity to win - after Nedved's cross from free kick he with his had (how else?) sent the ball into the left from Toldo corner of the goal. Here I must admit that it seemed to me that after Tudor had touched the ball it did not changed the direction of it's flight - Nedved shooted from left wing straight to the farsest low corner, and goalkeeper had saw this. But Igor confused Toldo, was being running to the flying ball, and goalkeeper moved to the right, when the leather sphere, having been touched Tudor's head, followed to fly in the same direction. All the time that was left till the end of the match Inter was hanging on Buffon's goal but had little chances to score. And only the talent of Seedorfа, who scored one more нunbelievable ball, saved then Cuper's team.

In the next match against "Hellas" Juve demonstrated quite colourless game, but won thanks to the goal of Nedved who started to play perfectly in the second round. And in the next two laps "Juventus" unexpectedly stumbled, at first having been defeated by "Parma" with minimal score in "Ennio Tardini", and then having been lost two points in "Delle Alpi"in struggle with "Lazio". Now "Inter" outstripped Juve on 5 points. And do not forget that "Roma" also was ahead... Lippi had to recognize that the battle for scudetto was almost lost - it was almost impossible to annihilate the distance of 5 points for 5 laps. But the struggle was going on and noone was going to surrender - example of "Lazio", which destroied the five-points wall for three laps was still clear in memory. But also it was clear that loss of even a single point more would deprive Juve even of theoretical chances. That's why in the next lap "Peruggia" was crashed, having been got four balls, and then "Milan" alsough hardly but was defeated. Without disqualified Nedved Juve only on 78th minute to bash Abbiati in - DelPiero crossed to goalkeeper's zone from free cick from the left wing, the ball hit a leg of Milan's defender Jose Antonio Chamot and appeared in the net. "Piacenza" was the next bar. It was serious bar, during all the match bianco-neri could not find the clues to from the goal of ordinary team of Serie A. And only when the last minutes were ticking out Pavel Nedved with his powerful shoot brought to his club vitally important victory. And this victory appeared quite intime - exactly in the 32th lap both of Old Signora's foes lost for two points - "Inter" in Verona on the last minutes missed from "Chievo", and "Roma" failed to target Abbiatti's goal in "San Sirro". Thus "Juventus" took the second place, was being outstripped "Roma" for the point and was being behind "Inter" for the point. For two laps before the end of the tournament championship's plot became too aglow - all was possible! In the 33th lap nothing changed - noone of the leading group stumbled. Juve, particularly, squashed "Brescia" 5:0. The last lap had to answer all questions - all hard works of the season, worship and honour, great money and fame were on a toss - on a toss was scudetto, whose desteny was determining in three matches.

"Roma" played in "DelleAlpi" with "Torino", who was not defeated by wolves here during 15 years! But now "Roma" had no another choice than to win and it did it thanks to the goal of Cassano. The wolves had done all that had depended on them and then they only could wait the results of other matches. But even always bold and expressive president of the roman club Franco Sensi before the game recognized that "Roma" had lost scudetto - the two competitors were before it, and the chances that both of them would loose points were tiny.

"Juventus" had a little easily task. At first, he was outstripped only by "Inter". At second, Old Signora played against "Udinese", which for the lap before this one had guaranteed for itmself a place in Serie A and on reason of it had not anything to die for. More than that, if "Roma" in past years had difficulties in matches against "Torino" in "Delle Alpi", "Stadio Friuli" for Old Signora is as sweet home. "Juventus" lost here only once for past 40 years, even less than in his own field! And now already in the 12th minute the score was 2:0 in guest's side, and Juve for the whole next time till the end of the match did not kicked even once into the goal of Udinese's goalkeeper DiSanctis - on what purpose? The same reason was that the players of "Udinese" did not disturb Buffon. The last word might be said by "Inter"...

... which played against "Lazio" in "Stadio Olimpico"! To tell the truth, it is not a gift. Further, in the last years romans used to have advantage under nero-azouri. This match did not become an exception. Without the pair of main forwards Crespo-Lopes the eagles triumphed with the score 4:2, and two goals were presented to Pavel Nedved by his countryman Carel Poborsky. "Juventus" won scudetto!

Of course, the players of "Juventus" made a great contribution to the success of their club. But we also must admit the following chain of lucky events that allowed Old Signora to get the 26th scudetto:
1) 31th lap. Own goal of Chamot that made "Milan" to surrender in "Delle Alpi".
2) 32th lap. Draw of "Inter" with "Chievo" in Verona that was sneaked by the flying donkeys on the last minutes of the match and that stole two super important points from Ector Cuper and his team.
3) 32th lap. Draw of "Roma" with "Milan" that appeared to volwes the same thing as the match with "Chievo" for "Inter".
4) 34th lap. Victory of "Lazio" under "Inter" in the last lap of championship. Thank you, Eagles!

And, finally, what do we see? Curious but historically fair situation: in 2002 "Juventus" was presented with the 26th scudetto by those who had deprived it in 2000! By "Milan", which had started then the beginning of the end, and by "Lazio", which had got that scudetto! Besides, we also have one more interesting fact connected with "Lazio": the eagles did their best scudetto was won by their fierce enemies - "Roma"! Imagine: the wolves in the matches with "Lazio" took 6 points, "Juventus" and "Inter" - only 1 each!

Players

Best

1. David Trezeguet.
Frankly speaking, all the team has played equally in this season, every player has given his contribution into common success. Yes, to the end of the season Nedved looked more vivid than others but in the first round his play was quite faded - even great players need some time to find themselves in new conditions... But I want to admit David Trezeguet for the one reason - he became the best scorer of Serie A. The last of Juve players, who reached this top, was Platini, and now David repeated the success of his legendary countryman and predecessor. Of course, formally Trezeguet has shared this title with Dario Hubner, but the veteran the decent part of his goals scored from penalty kicks, and frenchman scored only from play.

Discoveries

Are absent. All newcomers of this seasons were stars (Nedved, Buffon, Thuram, Salas) and they did exactly what was expected of them to do.

Disillusions

1. Salas.
To be exact - his injure. Chilian player started his play for Juventus perfectly but injure, obtained in the 7th lap in "Rinato DelAra", appeared very serious - Marcelo had to miss all the season. It is weakened Old Signora's attack, which looked quite unsatisfactory at the moments when some of it's leaders lost his play, and there was no dignified shift for them after Salas had been injured.

Matches

Best

1. Juventus FC - Bayer Leverkusen 4:0 (Trezeguet(2), DelPiero, Tudor). 1st match of Champions League Second Group tournament.
The perfect match as to the result, so to the plot - the future finalist of the League was just smashed by Turinian express. This match is also interesting because of the fact that it was being cancelled for several times in purpose of the fog that was standing under the capital of Piemont. Later "Bayer Leverkusen" was complaining and expressing it's defeat precisely with the fact, as if the fog was absent for bianco-neri. More than that - germans cooked some unthinkable story that exactly before the game they were driven in bus from an hotel to stadium not by the straight way but by some unknown and terrible back ways. They claimed that because of this they appeared exhausted physically and morally, and eventually lost the game. As a hero of one of the soviet cartoons was saying, would our friend believe in this exceptionally truthful story?

2. Roma AS - Juventus FC 0:0. 22th lap of serie A.
At first sight it seems that this game is not worth neither with result nor with plot to be accented on. But let's look at it more attentively. "Roma" was first then and "Juventus " was chasing it, have been loosing a couple of points - this means that in this match the first place was on a toss - in case of victory Old Signora would appear on the top, in case of defeat romans would escape on a decent distance. The first half of the game was spent by the teams in sharp and equal struggle, but almost at the end of the half arbiter sent Juliano off. Mark was playing on the position of left defender, which is not usual to him (he started his career as right defender and then moved to center), and he had great troubles with Cafu and frequently stopped him with fauls. It is obvious, that after this disqualification bianco-neri almost forgot about attack and the second half they spent near their goal. Notwithstanding "Roma" created a few moments, which missed to realize. Frankly speaking, I had impression that the wolves had not a great desire to go forward - a draw was quite satisfactory to them in reason of the point's advantage that they had under Old Signora. If only they knew that exactly a single point, that Juve got in "Stadio Olimpico", would reappear into scudetto after the last lap, they would run much faster! Anyway, directly after the game both of the rivals were quite satisfied with result.

3.Juventus FC - AC Chievo Verona 3:2 (Tacchinardi, Tudor, Salas (p)). 3th lap of serie A
Only for the first two laps club from Verona made a great noise in Serie A, naving been got, as Juve, 6 points from 6 possible, and having been defeated "Fiorentina" in "Artemio Franki". But in the third lap newcomer of the league had to pass exams in Turin. And donkeys started it successefully! At first after perfect counter-attack player of "Chievo" from the left corner of goalkeeper's zone shooted the nearest to Buffon corner. And then after corner goalkeeper of "Juventus" caught the ball in the air but unexpectedly to quitted hold of it and Marazzina only had to push it to the side of the goal. It seemed that Juve would follow the weird of violets - bold and audacious newcomer did not forgive any mistakes. But bianco-neri were not going to loose the team which not long ago was playing in Serie B, and quite fast scored one goal - it is Tacchinardi strongly kicked the ball when it was sent off the penalty square after corner. And at the end of the first time, also after corner, Tudor equalized the score, having been scored in his usual manner - with the head. In the second half the game changed a lot - it was a little couple of dangerous moments, the teams started to play in the defence more attentively. "Juventus" controlled the game, constantly but unsuccessefully threatened the goal of enemies, and "Chievo" answered with rare but dangerous counter-attacks - match was going to the draw, which would be satisfactory to donkeys but not for Old Signora. Juve's players, that were on the field, had almost depleted their recourse and Lippi made shifts, one of which appeared lucky. Salas, who perfectly recommended himself in the first two laps, in this game also fastened the game, having been produced a couple of dangerous moments which reached their culmination when penalty kick was appointed and Salas realized it. After the game, as usually, they started to roar how referees are helping "Juventus" - the enemy, as you know, does not sleep. To be honest at all, I must admit that exactly this penalty was looking quite arguable... But "Juventus" deserved that victorious ball! And what else were you expecting from me to say? :)

Worst

1. Torino Calcio - Juventus FC 3:3 (DelPiero (2), Tudor). 6th lap of serie A.
It is not the worst match as to the plot and, without hesitation, one of the best matches in whole championship to the neutral spectator. But not for Juve fan! After the first time Juve was leading three balls and in the second missed the same number! Catastrophe! Not only three goals were missed, but also from not strong team, and in addition - from Torino! At all, in this season Old Signora got from Torro five balls - more than from any other team... It is saint truth that derby is unpredictable. In conclusion I have to say that the match is the worst not because of Juve's game but of events' running.

2. SS Lazio - Juventus FC 1:0 (Liverani). 12th lap of serie A.
One of the three Juve's defeats in Serie A. The first from "Roma" alsough was quite fierce - at home and 0:2, but then Juventus had demonstrated good play and, frankly speaking, had not deserved such result. The last one, from "Parma", I have not seen and on this reason I can say nothing about it. But in the match with "Lazio" bianco-neri looked quite disgusting, especially in attack - any moments to score were absent. The Eagles, who looked more convincing, won thanks to Fabio Liverani - he threw the ball over Buffon, who had left the goal.

3. Deportivo - Juventus FC 2:0. The 4th match of the second group tournament of Champions League.
The same match as the previous, only in Champions League.

4. Bayer Leverkusen - Juventus FC 3:1. 4th match of Champions League Second Group tournament.
At first I had some doubts - either to place this game as the third among worst or as the fourth. I stopped my choice on the 4th place because in Leverkusen Juve's attack looked little better than in LaCoruna. And the fact that Old Signora missed more than in Spain means only that german players used their moments more effectively than Depor in it's time. In the first time chemists scored from penalty kick. They had advantage in the game but failed to appear it into something more useful than just control of the ball. Plot of the game did not changed in the second half but unexpectedly Juve equalized the score - Tudor, who came on the shift, scored. After a corner, as usually. Fierce from such mishap Bayer rushed to Buffon's goal and scored again, after some german player overjumped his foe, having been finished cross from a free kick. And the third goal was scored in counter-attack by Basturk already in added time, when bianko-neri almost with whole squad rushed into the enemy's part of field to save a draw.

Most Important

1. Piacenza Calcio - Juventus FC 0:1. Nedved. 32th lap of serie A.
Pavel Nedved in his best traditions with the powerful kick from the border of penalty zone presented the victory to his club. Very important goal which helped "Juventus" to get scudetto in 2002. Exactly this ball we can claim as the final own argument of Juve in struggle for scudetto, becausr the next games appeared easilier to win.

2. Torino Calcio - Juventus FC 2:2. Maresca. 24th lap of serie A.
Enzo, having been appeared on the field after the shift, equalized the score on the last seconds of the match when he in fantastic and almost unreal manner sent the ball with his head from about 15 meters to the high corner of Bucci's goal after Thuram had crossed from the right wing. This goal saved a point to Juve and allowed the team to finish the awful game against "Torino" in good strain.

Catastrophic

1. Parma AFC - Juventus FC 1:0 Some untruther. Second final match of Italian Cup.
The first final match of Italian Cup was finished with the score 2:1 in Juve's favour. Eventually the Cup went to the milk capital of Italy. This goal deprived Old Signora not just of the Italian Cup but of the TEN's Cup of Italy. May be, they'ld give Juve a silver star... And don't forget that it could be the third Juve's double!

2. Parma AFC - Juventus FC 1:0. Lamouchi?. 28th lap of serie A.
Well, "Parma" had drunk enough of Juve's blood in this season... Had they a lack of their milk? This goal made "Juventus" to loose the third time this season and marked a bold sign of question on Juve's intensions to get scudetto. Thanks God, all ended well...

3. FC Internazionale - Juventus FC 2:2.Seedorf'90+. 26th lap of serie A.
Alrady in additional time Seedorf from outside the borders of penalty ground, almost from the left edge of the field, with perfect shoot sent the ball under the bar! Good goal, there's nothing to say, but it was ridiculous why the player, who kept Clarens, allowed him to kick. If not this goal, all could be much clearer at the end of the season...

Wonderful piece of luck! At last SCUDETTO returned to Turin! Lippi repeated the success of year 1995, when immediatly after his arrival in Juve he won Italian championship. Well, then he also won national cup and reached final of UEFA Cup... But why should we be dissatisfied now? The main task is done! And only because of the single goal Cup of Italy moved to Parma. And even the crush in the second group tournament of Champions League can be considered as success on the background of two shameful european seasons in Ancelotti's age.
